CSA Summer Newsletter: August 14th, 2023 (Week 12/23)

Howdy Folks,

We have finally settled on a date for an open farm weekend.  October 14 & 15!  It’s peak season for the changing foliage, so it’s colorful yet still warm.  We also still have plenty of things growing, yet we aren't so busy anymore, so we will have time to chill and meet you and give you a farm tour…  Please mark your calendar now and stay tuned for more info about the event line up!  We will definitely be giving farm tours and there will certainly be a garlic social ( you don’t know what this is,  well you will find out when you get here, every time we have an event at this time of year, we always have a garlic social!!!  Fun times everyone!  We are so excited to have you out to the farm.  Now you can finally see where your food is coming from.  We had hoped for more events, but we have yet to find a way to be able to take off to make other dates planable, so we figured an entire weekend in the future, so you can make plans to get here.  This way both of the farmers will be here in the afternoon.  Tentative schedule is event starts at 3:30 goes until 8:00. This is subject to change. Keep a look out for a guide of things to do out in our area and a event schedule. We are so excited to have you.

Our current harvest of cherry tomatoes are happy and huge, super sweet and delightful to pop in your mouth a whole cherry at a time to crunch and feel the sun ripened fruit quench your taste buds!  Melons are several bites bigger, but pack a similar punch to the taste buds!  Fruits are always so well welcomed, they usually don’t take coaxing to eat or garnish frowns on your family members faces, so this week you should expect smiles!!!

Green Beans, this bean is our favorite. They are so green and keep producing excellent fruit.  They are also easy enough to freeze, with just  a quick blanch and soak into cold water, then drain and put in a ziplock freezer baggy for the deep freezer.

At this time of the year those of us with families that are feeling the crunch to make a few more precious memories with our kiddos before the summer break ends cheers to you!  I grew up with this quote on my refrigerator door and it’s made a lasting impression, although I’m not sure who is quoted… “ Nothing is more valuable to spend on your children than time.”  Enjoy these last days… Mum’s and Dad’s who have kiddos going off to college or Kindergarten, congratulations on this milestone!  There is nothing like being in the present!  We aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.  Last night after an afternoon of fishing on the stream that bends around the farm together ( we caught two walleye, we put them back as only one was legal harvestable size) Chris and I were talking with the kids, and they were asking about when we would retire, and our retort was, when you are old enough to take over the farm, so maybe 15 years.  We are in our 15th season now, so halfway feels pretty good.  We hope you are feeling good about your 2023 summer share, as we are now at the halfway point of the summer season.

Things to look forward to: Watermelon, Cantaloupe, Husk Cherries, Sweet Peppers, an array Winter Squash, and the return of Spinach and other cool weather loving greens.
